Inverness Airport (INV)

~3 Hour Drive to Skye

The closest regional airport to Skye. Great for connecting flights through London, Amsterdam, or Dublin.

Glasgow Airport (GLA)

~5 to 5.5 Hour Drive to Skye

Offers direct and 1-stop transatlantic flights from the US. Takes you through the breathtaking Glen Coe valley.

Edinburgh Airport (EDI)

~5.5 to 6 Hour Drive to Skye

Largest international terminal with broad transatlantic routes. Ideal if spending time in the capital before heading north.

CAR RENTALS & DRIVING

  • Drive on the Left: Vehicles drive on the left side of the road, and the driver sits on the right side of the vehicle.
  • Book Automatics Early: Standard rental cars in Scotland are manual (stick shift). Reserve an automatic transmission car well in advance as supply is limited.
  • Driver’s License: US citizens can drive in the UK for up to 12 months using a valid US driver's license. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required.
  • Single-Track Roads on Skye: Many roads on Skye narrow to a single lane with designated "Passing Places."
    Rule: Pull into or opposite a passing place on your left to let oncoming traffic pass. If a car behind you is driving faster, pull left to let them overtake.

PASSPORTS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Passport Validity: US passports must be valid for the duration of your stay. It is recommended to have at least 6 months of validity remaining beyond your travel dates.
  • No Visa Required: US citizens do not need a tourist visa for stays under 6 months.
